Can I Breathe? Pandemic Poem
Can I breathe/ In the early mornings/ No alarm sounding/ Can I have nowhere to be/ In the middle of the day/ The sun shining so bright/ Can I just take in all in/ Let the colors bounce off of me/ Bathing in blue, yellow, red, green/ Can you see the rainbow when looking at me/ I’m trying to be a picture of beauty/ Trying to be a calmness to those around me/ Giving off a nurturing spirit/ Everything a Brown skinned person is supposed to be seen as/ But you keep giving me hate/ Keep handing over rage/ Keeping finding problems with how I operate/ Can’t travel/ Can’t go outside and play/ Can’t protect myself/ Pepper spray has become used against me/ If I own a gun I’m the enemy/ / Who I am has become a homonymous view of whatever you want me to be/ However, right now I’m tried/ Can I just drink my coffee as midnight/ Stay up too late/ And just enjoy the silence
