It's exactly what's it's promoted to be; a movie about Black people falling in love. Some of that love is based in relationships and some of it is about chasing a career filled with passion. The Photograph was a beautiful movie. The visuals were excellent. The actors were amazing. I was drawn in every second of the movie.
What stood out most in the movie for me was Christina (played by Chante Adams). I'm a lover of people following their dreams and the scene where she gets on the bus to go to NYC warmed my heart. I also loved how even though she hurt the feelings of the men that fell for her, they understood her personality. They respected her through it all. She also respected them. I do wish the movie would have focused more on her journey as a photographer. From what we can tell, she dedicated her life to taking beautiful images of Black people.
I also loved the build up of Mae (Issa Rae) and Mike's (Lakeith Stanfield's) relationship. It was slow and steady. We were able to see them really get to know each other. We also weren't bothered with whatever troubles they had in their previous relationships. I do wish Mae wouldn't have been so hesitant. Her hesitance left us looking for more to the script. It felt like the moment her hesitance kicked in some drama should have been entered in the script, but there was no drama. The love story stayed simple.
I hope The Photograph means more movies showcasing Black love will be in movie theaters soon.
